Auckley Show 2009 The Chairman’s report.

What a fantastic event, visitors flocked to the show, this year surely was a record breaker. A rough count was taken and estimated that in excess of 3000 visitors attended. All the hard work throughout the last year by the committee and helpers on the day made it a huge success.

The Anglers in the junior fishing match on 11th August held at Bank End Fisheries did well, Lydia Wade on her first ever fishing expedition won the heaviest fish with a monster carp of 3lb 14 oz. Well done Lydia.

‘Auckley Show’s got talent’ on the Friday 14th August also saw a record turnout of entries and spectators. The competition was of an exceptionally high standard but also a great family orientated event and very entertaining.

The Fancy Dress Parade from the village green went ahead with another record turn out. This year 2Grand and Trax f.m. presenter Will Young, had a difficult time judging the entries. It was nice to see that so many parents had encouraged the youngsters to take part.

Horticultural and Produce exhibits were up by 110 on last year, clear evidence that more are becoming involved in this most important traditional part of the show.  We hope to be working on some more new ideas for next year’s schedule. Keep a lookout on our web site www.auckleyshow.co.uk for updates. A special mention should go to Shirley Gilligan, although not a committee member Shirley helps out behind the scenes, helping the youngsters to build kites, providing flower arrangements for presentations and the marquee and more importantly motivating others to take part. I am sure everyone noticed the increase in the ‘Floral Displays’ they all looked terrific and this was down to Shirley encouraging new people to become involved. I am sure they all enjoyed the day.

The Auckley W.I. excelled all expectations and for the first time at the show provided a selection of drinks cakes and sandwiches. I hope all their hard work was rewarding because we want them back for the 2010 Show.

The afternoon entertainment was fantastic, we intended to cater for all age groups and I am sure we did just that. 2Grand, The Armthorpe Elmfield Band, Mr Magic, Premier Martial Arts, Irish Dancing and hip hop from Optimum Limit all contributed to what I believe was the best ever line up.

I would also like to congratulate Barry Lax and his team for the bar services. They were the ‘victim of our success’ and were stretched to their limit. The staff worked non stop throughout the day and night to keep up with a record breaking crowd that had turned out. The bar takings were up on last year and this has been acknowledged by Barry with his more than generous donation towards the cost of the show. Thanks Barry and team.

The tug of war featured in the afternoon with the ‘Auckley Show Stoppers’ winning the event. Pete Neale has offered to organise next year’s competition and I am informed teams are in training already.

Lucy Chappell from Boston Park Farm is to be congratulated for the show jumping spectacle that has again become part of the day.

The auction of exhibits ended the day and the proceeds of this also broke records. Paul Morris is still trying to finish off eating that big onion.

As soon as the auction ended staff from ‘Occasions’ at Epworth, our caterers for the evening, breezed in and took control to transform the marquee for the evening’s entertainment and what a fantastic job they made for the 350 ticket sell out. The meal and service were superb as was the cabaret to follow. Ciccolina got us in the mood followed by a special guest appearance of 2 grand. To end the evening the best band in South Yorkshire ‘The Men’s Club’ just put the icing on the cake of our 25th Anniversary celebration of the Show.

The most encouraging part of being a committee member is the thought of promoting and maintaining that special community spirit we have. We always need more volunteers to spread the work load.

The next show will be Saturday 14th August 2010. If you would like to be involved in any aspect of the planning, sponsorship, helping on the day or to join the committee; we meet the third Wednesday of the Month in the New Parish Centre Auckley.

A full list of all winners who took part in the show is published on our web site www.auckleyshow.co.uk  there are also some great photos of the day, have a look.
